Denzel Washington Killed In A Drive-By Shooting In New York Is A Celebrity Death Hoax

Denzel Washington killed in a drive-by shooting in New York is just another celebrity death hoax. There is no truth to a report that Academy Award-winning actor was killed in a drive-by shooting in New York. Of course, there is no truth to this outrageous death. Instead, it is another celebrity death hoax that has seen people alleging someone like Washington, Eddie Murphy or Ted Nugent were recently killed.

Washington is the former star of the hit TV drama “St. Elsewhere.” He has earned popular and critical acclaim for his roles in an array of feature films, including “Glory,” “Malcolm X,” “Training Day,” “American Gangster” and “Flight.”

Where did this fake news originate? The “Houston News” web site published on Jan. 27 2016, an article reporting that Washington was killed in a drive-by shooting in New York. You can read text from that fake story below.

“An American actor, director, and producer, Denzel Washington is tragically killed today after being shot in New York.

Around 2:00 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about a man shot in a drive-by on Alabama Avenue street in East New York and upon identification, the victim happened to be the most sensational and highly sought after American movie icon, Denzel Washington.

The actor who was currently one of the most prolific figure in the global movie industry was killed from a close distance by unknown gunman.

He was found dead in a pool of blood strangled to death, police said.

The 62-year-old movie star had been wounded in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Here are some examples of people sharing the celebrity death hoax about Washington on social media.

There was no truth to this report as Washington is clearly alive and well. Instead, the “Houston News” is a fake news web site whose domain name (houstonchronicle-tv.com) is designed to fool readers by imitating that of the legitimate Houston Chronicle newspaper, according to Snopes.

Denzel Washington is quite alive and still working, currently engaged in production of an upcoming crime drama provisionally titled Inner City.

Washington spoke the stirring words of John Coltrane in Chasing Trane trailer. The documentary, written and directed by John Scheinfeld, explores Coltrane’s incredible life and career with the help of commentary from celebrity fans, including Bill Clinton, Common, Carlos Santana, and Sonny Rollins, not to mention Denzel Washington, on hand to read writings by Coltrane himself.

Washington had recently found himself at the Oscars where his film, Fences was nominated for several awards. In that film, Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son’s (Jovan Adepo) chance to meet a college football recruiter.
