Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Cast On Avengers: Infinity War So What Will Be Doctor Strange’s Role?

Benedict Cumberbatch is on set filming his part in “Avengers: Infinity War.” The actor is reprising his role of Doctor Strange which he first played last year in the character’s stand alone film.

Doctor Strange is also expected to cameo in “Thor: Ragnarok” later this year, but where he will really flex his muscles is with the impending fight against Thanos in the two-film “Avengers” initiative next year.

Cumberbatch has been confirmed for many months, but before this point only a stand-in could be used. Now though he is there and he is filming according to his movement coach Jay Funk who tweeted the news he and Cumberbatch are now in Atlanta on the shoot.

What remains to be answered is the question of how Doctor Strange will factor into the film.

Cumberbatch is just the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe star to arrive on the Atlanta set. Earlier this week, Black Panther‘s Danai Gurira was confirmed to return as Okoye, leader of the elite bodyguards the Dora Milaj, joining her fellow Black Panther co-stars Chadwick Boseman, Winston Duke and Letitia Wright. With recent set photos seemingly hinting at Wakanda’s large presence in Infinity War, it is more than likely the cast will play a large role in the third Avengers film.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War boasts a sprawling ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film arrives in theaters May 4, 2018, with the untitled sequel opening May 3, 2019.
