Photo of Scarecrow Made Out of Human Corpse Is Actually Spooky Halloween Prop

Halloween and all things spooky may still be a few months away, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from sharing some truly terrifying pranks One example is a photo that purportedly shows a scarecrow made out of a human corpse. The skeletal scarecrow, however, was not part of any grisly discovery—it is actually an eerie Halloween prop.

According to Snopes, the convincing prop originally appeared on the House of Marrow blog in May 2012 in the “Props” category. The series, titled “Skeleton Country,” featured both artsy and downright frightening photos. The photos took on new life, however, when a scary (and fake) story was added: “In the early 2000s, a man bought a ranch in Texas. He noticed a scarecrow in the middle of his land. He went up to it and smelt something rotting. He took the clothes off the scarecrow and discovered it was a human skeleton. This is the photo he took before authorities arrived.”

The prop’s creator provided the scarecrow with its own backstory on the Haunt Forum in 2012, possibly adding some confusing to the authenticity of the prop. Titled “Corpse Scarecrow,” the artist explained, “poor fellow trespassed on the wrong farmer’s property. He was beaten and tied to a scarecrow post with barbed wire, a burlap sack over his head, and left to die. He was still alive and conscious when the crows started to peck at him.” That story, however, was nothing more than fiction.

Additional details about the creepy scarecrow were added in the comments of the artist’s initial post. He explained that the photos were taken at an abandoned farmhouse outside Wellington and that the scarecrow was originally going to have a cardboard box over his head. “But it looked weird and awkward, so I went with the burlap sack,” he said. “VERY glad that I did.” In addition to the burlap sack, the skeleton itself was made of newspaper and masking tape.

The scarecrow was nothing more than a scarily good Halloween prop.
