Chelsea Clinton Saying Female Genital Mutilation Has ‘Health Benefits’ Is A Hoax

Chelsea Clinton tweeting out that “genital mutilation” is a culturally loaded, racist term, and that the practice of “genital cutting” has many health benefits is a hoax. There is no truth to a viral April 2017 tweet allegedly showing Clinton defending the cultural practice of “genital cutting.” However, there is no accuracy in the image of the fake tweet.

Here are some examples of people responding on social media to the fake tweet.

The above examples show people responding directly to Clinton’s verified Twitter account (@ChelseaClinton), even though no such tweet can be found on it.

Snopes reported that there is no record of Clinton ever suggesting that female genital mutilation (FGM) be called anything other than what it is, nor claimed that FGM has “health benefits,” nor taken anything less than a strong stand against it.

For example, Clinton tweeted that female genital mutilation must be eradicated wherever it is found in the world. The tweet was sent two weeks before the controversy to the fake tweet.

The only “evidence” that Clinton has ever said anything to the contrary is the alleged screenshot of an April 26, 2017 tweet from the “@ClintonChelsea” account. Snopes took notice of the reversal of the first and last times to the verified account of Clinton’s.

Clinton herself responded to the fake tweet as well as the number of threats from individuals who took it as real. Clinton did not react favorably to the number of people tweeting that she or her daughter ought to be subjected to genital mutilation, especially given that the message in which she allegedly expressed support for it was a hoax.

The World Health Organization defines female genital mutilation (FGM) as “all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.”

Here are some more examples of people discussing the fake tweet on social media.

What did you think of the fake tweet alleging that Clinton made a comment about the health benefits of genital mutilation? Did you believe it or see people sharing it falsely on social media? Let us know in the comments section.
